SCOTTSBORO, Ala. (WHNT) -- Scottsboro Police are looking for three people they say passed hundreds of dollars worth of counterfeit bills.

Lieutenant Scott Matthews says this happened earlier this week. "Wednesday I had two black males and a white female go into a Wal-Mart and make a purchase, and they paid for that purchase with 420 dollars worth of 20 dollar bills," Lieutenant Matthews says.

He says when the Wal-Mart found out about the fake bills, they immediately told the police department, but that was several days later and now Scottsboro Police haven't been able to find the three suspects.

What they do have are pictures. "They're not from Scottsboro, we don't recognize them," Lieutenant Matthews says, "Nobody here recognizes them, so it's probably going to be one of those things where they are within a three or four hour radius from here."

Police say after the three used the fake bills at the Wal-Mart, they went to other businesses. "They actually tried again last night at two or three businesses in Scottsboro but were unsuccessful," Lieutenant Matthews says.

If you know anything about this case or who the three might be you're asked to call the Scottsboro Police Department at (256) 574-3333.

Why didn’t Walmart use the marker on the 20’s. Scottsboro is just easy prey….c’mon scottsboro, get with it!

I agree Kathy. When someone comes in with THAT kind of cash it should always be checked. Not too many people these days carry a lot of cash. It would have taken less than 30 seconds to fan those bills out and mark them. I hope the employee doesn’t get in too much trouble but I bet they’ll always check now!

    — “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” Matthew 7:13-14 safeguardyoursoul.com

Those markers only work if the paper is fake. A bleached out bill that has been reprinted will appear to be a genuine bill. Seen it several times.
