Athens Receives Quality Of Life Award

ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT)- The City of Athens is getting state wide recognition for its combined natural gas initiative.   Showing why the quality of live in Athens is among the best in state.

Athens mayor Ronnie Marks spent the day with a camera crew.

"The city won quality of life award from the League of Municipalities for our compressed natural gas program." said Holly Hollman, Communication Specialist for the City of Athens.

The footage they shoot today will be shown at the upcoming convention in May.

"It`s pretty big because we were in the top population category; we had to compete with other cities such as Huntsville." Holman said.

The crew got a tour of the public station.

"What makes our program unique is we are the only public station on I65 between Birmingham and Nashville." Holman said

Recognition that could turn into a model

"This is a way to have a cleaner burning fuel, it`s cheaper so it cost tax payers less to fun, especially those larger fleet vehicles such as garbage trucks." Holman said.

The city of Athens will receive the Quality of Life award at the League of Municipalities convention in May.
