REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. (WHNT) — Some changes are coming to the gates of Redstone Arsenal.

Arsenal officials say the changes are necessary to accommodate the reduction in guard force authorizations. The U.S. Army Installation Management Command ordered the changes which will have an impact on the operating hours of three gates.

All gate changes will begin on Sunday, January 26 at midnight.

Gate 8:

  • Closed Monday through Friday.
  • Open Saturdays and Sundays from 5:30 a.m. until midnight.

Gate 3:

  • Open for incoming and outgoing traffic Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
  • Open for only outgoing traffic after 1:00 p.m.
  • Closed to outgoing traffic at 6:00 p.m.

Gate 7:

  • Open for incoming and outgoing traffic Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
  • Open for only outgoing traffic after 1:00 p.m.

I find it interesting that they are reducing the hours to Gate 7 but at the same time building a brand new road for it….

The plan is to reduce shopping at the commissary and use the data to close it. The ones in power hate veterans, that should be quite clear.

Also, why reduce hours and force traffic onto I-565? This was done the last time and created numerous hazards to employees and the public. In a word…ludicrous.

Jim, I didn’t think about the commissary aspect of this, but you are absolutely correct. They were told to get on board with the plans from higher up and thats what they are doing. Great observation. Also I believe they are diverting more traffic to I-565 so that Huntsville can get state and/or federal funds to help expand I-565. They already got the tax increase, now they want to use that money elsewhere and have the state/feds pay for the road. just my .02

Thank you, Gloria. People who are affected by the traffic, yet don’t use the gates are left in the dark as to what the traffic impact will be to them. Your comment was very helpful to me.

I didn’t think about the commissary affects, but that makes sense because more and more they are out of stock on items. It doesn’t matter what day you go, some item is always out of stock.

Gate 7 this AM at 0645 was very problematical – triple your gate waiting time (not driving time, but gate wait time) at a minimum – took me 3 red lights to get through 1 telephone pole distance due to backup. Great job IMCOM

Explain why they have to close gate 7 to inbound traffic at 1300 hours. There has two be two guards at the gate per policy. So both sit inside watching traffic go out. Why can’t one be inside and one letting people though? They can trade off every hour. This is political, it does not make sense. Shame on the Garrison big wigs. Additionally, how much money did Huntsville put up for the road the taxpayers won’t be able to use? Politics 101. Tommy Battle needs to get involved and pull some tax money were giving the Arsenal!!

The DoD goes about “saving” money by throwing out the least of its number, guards, baggers and such, while standing knee deep in flag officers too busy hustling defense jobs for their retirement years and sustaining mistresses to take care of those who served their whole adult lives in harm’s way. And we in Huntsville build mansions for Redstone Generals.

  • K. Anderson

The Garrison Commander needs to be reported to the Army and FIRED because he is not capable of balancing budget costs with common sense. If the budgets are reduced, find an area to cut that will not affect THOUSANDS of people in Huntsville. As the largest employer in Huntsville, he should realize that he wasted thousands of people’s time this morning and in the future. What normally takes 15 minutes to get into the Jordan Road gate, took 1.5 HOURS this morning!!! Literally THOUSANDS of people were affected by this insanity. If budgets are low, cut the number of banks or restaurants on post – or find a different way to cut costs. To take it from the gate personnel was irresponsible, unprofessional, and makes it clear that the wrong person is in the job.
