LUCASVILLE, Ohio (WBNS) – It took more than 15 minutes for a condemned Ohio killer to die from a lethal injection process never before tried in the U.S.

Dennis McGuire, 58, was executed Thursday for the 1989 rape and murder of 22-year-old Joy Stewart, reports CBS affiliate WBNS.

McGuire appeared to gasp several times during his prolonged execution. McGuire made several loud snorting or snoring sounds after being injected with the two-drug combination of the sedative midazolam and the painkiller hydromorphone. His stomach rose and fell several times as he repeatedly opened and shut his mouth.

WBNS reports that Ohio adopted the use of the sedative and painkiller after supplies of its previous execution drug dried up when its manufacturer put it off limits for capital punishment.

McGuire’s adult children sobbed a few feet away in a witness room as they watched him die.

They are now putting together a federal lawsuit, suing the state of Ohio.

Unusual pain and suffering??? Had the victim been MY daughter, I would have done anything to insure He had a slow and very painful demise. How about the pain and suffering he brought upon his victim?

the only problem I see with this is all the yrs we fed and clothed and took care of a murderer. this is the real problem and the victims family should sue for their own tax dollars being used to take care of the man that murdered their daughter and grandchild.

I agree! Who says anyone on death row is entitled to a “humane” execution? Their victims weren’t given that option! I personally believe the “eye for an eye” rule should be brought back so people such as this know what their victims went through.

no one real;izes that this pig murdered raped and kidnapped this young woman and her unborn son, but after this happened her husband committed suicide there were 3 victims his suffering??? come on

    • Sue

He raped and murdered a pregnant young woman with no family there to tell her goodbye. Her husband commits suicide and friends and other family members will NEVER have complete peace You are right he is a PIG!! Since 1989 this inhumane nothing has been kept alive. …ans he thinks he is going to Heaven? Fat Chance!! I WOULD NOThave the nerve to try to sue anyone on the behalf of a RAPIST and MURDERER!! If he had not gotten caught the family members and their kids could have been among the victims. They just want money! They know he deserved what he got! He suffered? Oh well- GOOD! If I were the victim’s family I would have GLADLY sent him where he is going to Hell- Very Slowly- a lot slower than it was-he should ENJOY the pain!

So, you guys are saying a man should suffer and slowly die and have his children watch as he takes his last look at this world ? Not supporting this guy, but I think it should have been quicker, at least.

    • Gary Taber

A quick death is preferable, even in his case. My wife died in a similar manner as he did. The cancer had spread extensively…..what actually caused her death was the high level of pain killing medication. That was the way she wanted to “go”. No more radiation. Anyway, regarding the demise of the murderer/raper, his “children” did not have to watch.

Actually, him facing a firing squad or a hangman’s noose would have been a great method of execution. Maybe more States should consider those.

Tyler, so what! This man murdered a pregnant woman and her unborn child. It is not like he was put to death for stealing food to feed his family! His victim did not have a quick death.
