HUNTSVILLE, Ala.(WHNT)-Huntsville Police say a man is dead after he was shot in the head Friday night at a Huntsville apartment complex on Knight Road.

The Madison County Coroner tells WHNT 54-year-old Tim Smith died this morning at Huntsville Hospital. Police on the scene said that he was taken there with life-threatening injuries and undergoing emergency surgery after Friday's shooting.
No arrests have been made in the case. Police said they had a description of the suspect at the shooting scene.

Police officials say officers who were on patrol nearby responded to multiple gunshots being fired at the Knight Garden Apartments on Knight Road in southwest Huntsville shortly after 5:30 p.m. After arriving they found a man inside one of the units who had been shot in the head, an injury officers described as life-threatening.

Investigators did not give a name or description of the gunman, only saying they were looking for a suspect who fled the scene. What led up to the shooting also remains unknown right now. Police did not release any other information about the victim or what, if any, connection he had with the gunman.

Neighbors who declined to speak on camera told WHNT News 19 that the complex has become a regular gathering spot for drug dealers and other illegal activity.
