HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - Johnson head basketball coach Jack Doss is one of six Alabama high school coaches nominated for the USA Today Best Boys Basketball Coach 2014.
Doss has over 700 wins in 36 years of coaching.
"It's more about helping our young men be successful and get into college with a basketball scholarship than it is about the wins," says Doss.
He says no coach is successful just by winning games, and no coach does it alone.
"Well, you're never put up for national coach of the year with terrible talent," Doss says. "We have some really good coaches that donut have very good talent that are probably just as capable as I am but like I said I've been in situations with great talent and administrative support and that's what it takes - everybody working together for the common good of the young men and it's great to see some of our former players go on to play in college and in the pros and know you had just a little bit to do with it."
Humble as he is, coach Doss admits a nod from a national publication is still a great honor.
"Any time USA Today is involved in anything it's a big honor for anybody that's a part of it. I'm just glad to be a part and to represent our part of the state and it'll be interesting."
Doss says his goal any year is to have a state championship and keep kids on that path and mindset of greatness.
"It would be nice to win number 8 this year," Doss smiled.
