SHEFFIELD, Ala. (WHNT) – Investigators have made an arrest in a nightmarish case that has had investigators at Sheffield Police Department working overtime the last two and a half months.

According to Sheffield Police, Tavares Terrell Garner, 31, of Huntsville has been arrested and charged in connection with the rape of a woman at the Colbert Square Apartments in October of 2013.

In a prepared statement, Chief Investigator Cpt. Scott Wallace said Garner was taken into custody on Thursday by U.S. Marshals and Sheffield Police.

According to investigators, Garner knocked on the victim’s apartment door, and when she answered, he forced his way in and viciously attacked her.

After the attack, detectives said Tavares Garner forced the woman outside of her apartment and stole her car, leaving it just five blocks from the scene of the crime.

Since the October attack of the 50-year-old woman, Wallace and others have been relying on an artist rendering and contacts in the community to try to bring Garner into custody.

Garner has been charged with rape, burglary, theft of property, sexual abuse and robbery.

Police say Garner is being held at the Colbert County Jail on $250,000 bond.
