HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - Members who were recently in the dark over the Gold's Gym closure in south Huntsville have new information at their hands.

WHNT News 19 has learned the Gold’s Gym location at 7900 Bailey Cover Road in Huntsville, Ala. was independently owned and operated by Witherow Holdings, LLC.   As a result of their sudden closure in December, Witherow Holdings, LLC is no longer affiliated with Gold’s Gym corporation.

The Gold’s Gym headquarters in Dallas, Texas also tells WHNT News 19 they are unaware of any plans by Witherow Holdings, LLC to establish another fitness facility in Huntsville.

In the meantime, we’ve learned the former franchisee transferred the current membership base to SportsMED Alabama.  This workout facility is located at 4715 Whitesburg Drive in Huntsville.

SportsMED does not have any affiliation with Gold’s Gym, but is offering former members the ability to transfer over to them with no fees attached.  Additionally, members will not receive any argument or headaches should they decline that offer.

SportsMED says they will not be offering refunds for Gold’s Gym customers who were charged a monthly fee during the closure period.  However, they assure WHNT News 19 they will be more than willing to accommodate members with free monthly workout services to compensate for the automatic withdrawals that were done during the transitional period.

Individuals who wish to discuss the status of their membership should contact SportsMED Alabama at (256) 319-8501.

Golds Gym has always been a crappy Gym. I’m glad they closed so they can’t rip any more people off. I can’t tell you how many people got shafted with their “no contract” pitch, only to find out that trying to cancel your membership was indeed breaking a contract and had to pay out the whazoo. Goodbye Golds Gym, may you rot in pieces!

What’s especially interesting is when we were trying to cancel our membership in November (due to unannounced fees), their whiteboard said they were under new management. So apparently Witherow Holdings bought it just to close it.
