What do you think were the most important stories of the year? The carnage in Syria? Miley’s over-the-top performance at the VMAs? is asking readers to select up to 10 of the top stories of the year. The final results will be revealed later this month on and CNN TV. Voting closes on December 27.

Here are a couple of the choices:

A new pope

In a shocking move, Pope Benedict XVI becomes the first pope to resign in almost 600 years. A month later, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio is elected his successor, taking the papal name Pope Francis.

Boston Marathon attacks

Two bombs explode near the Boston Marathon finish line, killing three and injuring more than 180. A dramatic hunt ensues, ending four days later with the capture of suspected bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

Cleveland kidnappings

Three young women and a six-year-old girl are rescued from a Cleveland house where they had been held and abused by Ariel Castro for a decade. Castro is sentenced to life in prison, where he commits suicide.

Jodi Arias convicted

Jodi Arias is found guilty of the 2008 murder of ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander.
