Jane Mabry, Huntsville’s First City Councilwoman Dies

HUNTSVILLE, Ala (WHNT) – Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle confirmed Jane Mabry passed away on Thursday. Mabry was the first woman elected to the Huntsville City Council. She served in the 1970s and 1980s.

Mayor Battle talked with WHNT News 19 about Mabry’s passing.

“I got notification this morning and was a little bit shocked,” said Mayor Battle.

Mabry was a longtime Rotarian. The organization released a statement to its members. A portion of it is below:

“It is with much sorrow to share that long time Rotarian Jane Mabry passed away yesterday, Thursday, December 19, 2013. Jane joined our club on December 3, 1991, and currently served as a STRIVE mentor.”

Mayor Battle added, “I had gotten an email this past week from Jane. She was always telling us exactly how she felt and what she thought.”

Mabry died at Huntsville Hospital. She was recovering from a recent heart attack. She was 77 years old.

Mabry was a member of the Huntsville Rotary Club. The club's executive director told WHNT News 19 Mabry will be cremated. Plans for a memorial service have not yet been finalized.
