BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WHNT) – The Birmingham fire chief says a woman has been found dead in the rubble following an explosion Tuesday morning at an apartment complex.

The blast happened in the Gate City area, near the intersection of Joppa Avenue and Georgia Road.

Our news partner Al.com reports a man was pulled from the rubble alive, and more than half a dozen others, including five children were hospitalized with various injuries.
All of the injured are expected to survive.

The explosion happened at approximately 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.  Fire officials say the blast destroyed two five-bedroom apartments.

Residents say they were overwhelmed by the noise and damage.

“I heard this boom and all our glasses went out and hit me in the back and I just hit the floor and I really thought it was someone doing something bad outside,” said Robert Norton. “When I go outside I see this apartment on fire.”

The cause of the explosion isn’t known yet.  The fire is contained.

There were previous reports of two people missing following the blast.  It’s not clear yet if those two people are among those killed or injured.
