Shoppers are planning to spend more this year on gift cards than ever before.

According to an article on Credit.com, the average consumer will spend $163.16 on gift cards, a 4% increase from last year.

Experts say part of the reason behind the increase is a shift in attitude toward gift cards. Once considered an impersonal gift, gift cards are now desired.  A recent survey found 86% of Americans say they would be excited to receive a gift card.

What do you think? Will you give gift cards this holiday? Would you be excited to receive a gift card or would you rather a friend or family member put a little more thought into it?
