NORMAL, Ala. (WHNT) – Alabama A&M University Police arrested a graduate student suspected of rape early Sunday morning.

An AAMU spokeswoman said the graduate student was arrested in the Normal Hills Apartments, adjacent to the campus.

Monica Ray, Executive Director of Public Safety, said the victim was an out-of-town guest and not a student.  The woman reported the suspect assaulted her while she was visiting him in his apartment.  She said he was her ex-boyfriend.

Ray said there was never any immediate or continuing threat to the campus community.

“We have taken and continue to take numerous steps to provide a safe environment for both our students and the thousands of visitors to our campus,” commented Ray. “We take all allegations of sexual assault seriously and regret any incident that negatively impacts our campus community.”

AAMU did not release the name of the graduate student who was arrested.

The Madison County District Attorney’s Office will review the case.
