LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – Lawrence County Sheriff Gene Mitchell reports that deputies discovered and busted up a whiskey still just north of Mouton.

“I’ve been sheriff here now for my seven years, and it’s my first one I’ve had here,” said Mitchell.  “They’ve just about gone away.”

Deputies located a 15-gallon pot still at a residence on Hwy 33, just north of Moulton.  Shawn Osborne was arrested for having the still.

“If he sets it up right it could easily run a gallon per day,” said Mitchell.  At $140 to $150 per gallon, this homemade whiskey isn’t cheap, according to Mitchell.

“The product from them is potent.  Real high proof.  A lot of folks just go crazy with it,” said Mitchell.

“I guess were going to have to be on the lookout more for whiskey stills,” said Mitchell.

If government doesn’t make money off it, you go to jail and pay big fines.

Seriously folks, this Prohibition era holdover “prohibition” needs to be done away with. A man gets fined and goes to jail for running off a gallon of liquor while criminals running government get away with MUCH worse.
