The Great Diaper Drive gathers 40,000+ diapers for needy families
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – The numbers are in! WHNT News 19 and RocketCityMom.com are proud to announce the results of The Great Diaper Drive, a month long drive to collect diapers and wipes for local babies in need.
All collected items benefit Manna House, a Huntsville non-profit providing food and other necessities to families. The need is often hard to fill, especially when it comes to diapers, one of the most-requested items.
A recent study suggested many American mothers struggle to afford the cost of diapering even one child – sometimes having to space out or skip diaper changes all together. Manna House administrators admit they’ve seen moms face the same struggles in the Tennessee Valley, so WHNT News 19 and RocketCityMom.com took action and with help from viewers and readers – got results.
As of Sept. 30th, more than 40,000 diapers had been collected. However, due to high demand and increased need from families impacted during the government shutdown in early October, Manna House no longer has quite that many on hand.
The Great Diaper Drive ran Sept. 1st through Sept. 30th and included a number of events including a RocketCityMom.com “Diaper Shower” event at KidVenture in Madison. Local residents turned out in force and dropped off more than 7,500 diapers.
On Wednesday, Sept. 11th WHNT News 19 orchestrated a “Blitz Drive” to benefit the cause, calling on viewers to donate not only at a central donation site outside The Rock Church in Huntsville but also at bins across the Tennessee Valley. New mom and morning anchor Michelle Stark was live during the all-day event, along with other members of the WHNT News 19 on-air staff. The results were amazing! Local residents dropped off a whopping 8,600 diapers.
Manna House also received direct donations of at least 2,300 diapers and another 15,000 will be purchased at Costco with money donated directly to the non-profit as part of the drive.
WHNT News 19 would like to thank everyone who helped to make this effort a success, including the many local business partners, sponsors and of course the kind-hearted people who contributed.
