MADISON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) - A Madison County School got a big check today.

The Women in Defense group presented a check to Mount Carmel Elementary.

The money will support what's called a STEM learning station.

Stem stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

And Mount Carmel school leaders say the money, totaling $1,720, will be put to good use.

"When we needed for the kids to be able to study interactively with technology and stem was about $1,700. One station was about $1,700.  But were able to find funding that was more affordable and the women in defense funded every station," said Cyndy Dunning.

And to give you an understanding of how important this is, in 2009, the Program of International Student Assessment said 15 year olds in the United States ranked 18th in math and 13th in science in the world.
