Pope Francis is speaking out on some of the key social issues of our time – and sending shockwaves through the Catholic Church with his comments.

As Reuters reports via The Chicago Tribune, Francis said the church “must shake off an obsession with teachings on abortion, contraception and homosexuality and become more merciful or risk the collapse of its entire moral edifice.”

The statements come from a candid interview in an Italian Jesuit journal. In that discussion, Francis also said the Church had becomed too focus on “small things” and doctrine and should not be so prone to condemn.

The Pope’s comments have been largely welcomed by liberal Catholics but conservatives have already “expressed concern over Francis’s failure to address publicly the issues stressed by his predecessor, Benedict.”
