Alabama Lawmakers to Discuss Closure of International Paper Mill

MORGAN COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – Alabama state lawmakers will meet Thursday to discuss the recent announcement to close the International Paper mill in Courtland.

Alabama Speaker of the House, Mike Hubbard, and State Representative, Ken Johnson of Moulton, will hold a news conference Thursday afternoon.

The company announced it’s plans to close the plant. The decision affects about 1,100 people. International Paper plans to close the plant in stages. The shutdown is expected to be complete by the first quarter of 2014.

The news conference is expected to address the plant closure, as well as recruiting new jobs to the area. It’s scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Jack Daniel’s Cooperage on Cooperage Way in Trinity.

There will also be a roundtable discussion with area business leaders prior to the news conference.
