Police Chief Chris Hargett says officers are guarding James Chris Spencer, 46, in his room at Helen Keller Hospital in Sheffield.  They have a warrant charging him with murder.

His mother, 65-year-old Rosalyn Spencer, was found dead Thursday in her home on Green Avenue.  Chief Hargett says police found her lying on the floor in a bedroom. The chief says there were signs of a struggle in that same room.

Police say Spencer has a history of domestic violence and assault charges.  In all cases, the calls involved Spencer fighting with his mother.

The two lived together at the home on Green Avenue.
