(WHNT) - In this segment of Leadership Perspectives, Paul Finley talks with Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks about annexation challenges.

Madison and Huntsville have both moved in to Limestone County.  What concerns does Mayor Marks have about this?

Marks said he focuses on what he can do to improve public safety, quality of life and education for the citizens of Athens.  With annexation, he said it's certainly challenging, but it's important to weigh Athens' strengths, weaknesses and look at areas the city can grow with Madison and Huntsville.

Another big challenge - raising taxes.  Mayor Marks said people don't complain nearly as much about tuition hikes at Alabama and Auburn, even though they continue to send their children there.

Marks said it's important to be up front with citizens and tell them what the city intends to do with the money.  Two of the most important things, in his eyes, are improvements to roads, paired with matching grants, and better infrastructure.
