church fireNEW MARKET, Ala. (WHNT) – Madison County volunteer firefighters worked into the early morning Thursday putting out a church fire.

It happened at the Locus Grove Baptist Church on County Lake Road in New Market. Just after midnight, smoke was coming from the old sanctuary’s bell tower.

Fire crews say the fire was contained to the front part of the building when they arrived.

The Madison County Fire Marshal says lightning struck a tree next to the sanctuary last Saturday. Since then, church members say they have had electrical problems, though the cause of the fire isn’t clear yet.

There was no structural damage to the church.
