HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - Police have identified the man who was hit by a car while crossing University Drive on Wednesday night.

It happened about 8:30 p.m. just north of Old Monrovia Road near Madison Square Mall.  Police say Dayle Bernard Thomas, 24, of Huntsville, was walking across the road.  He was about 30 feet away from a cross walk.

The driver of the SUV that hit Thomas stopped and flagged down help.  Thomas was rushed to Huntsville Hospital by ambulance, and as of Thursday morning, he was listed in critical but stable condition.

University Drive eastbound was closed for nearly two hours as an accident investigator collected information.

Police say the driver of the SUV does not face charges.
