HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Huntsville Utilities has issued a warning about scammers targeting unsuspecting utilities customers.

“Over the past couple of weeks we have received calls from business owners who have been contacted by individuals claiming they are from Huntsville Utilities stating that their utility bill was past due and if they did not pay that day they would be cut off,” stated utility spokesman Bill Yell.

Yell said that one customer was told to meet a “collector” in a remote parking lot to make a payment.

Though Huntsville Utilities does contact their customers about past due bills, they only contact them after the bill reaches a certain amount and never demand same-day payment to prevent disconnection.

If you are contacted by a person claiming to represent Huntsville Utilities, always ask for specific information, such as their name and company contact information.  You may contact Huntsville Utilities to verify any information given over the phone or to report suspicious contact from individuals claiming to represent Huntsville Utilities.
