Remembering When Alabama Music Group Hit #1 for First Time

FORT PAYNE, Ala. (WHNT) – Fort Payne's own Alabama reached number one with their hit "Tennessee River" in 1981. The song was the first of the group's 41 hit songs. The band formed in 1969.

Members Randy Owen, Teddy Gentry and Jeff Cook continue to call Alabama home.

The group is often credited with paving the road for today's successful country music groups. In 2005, Alabama was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
