HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – The Von Braun Center, named after rocket scientist Wernher Von Braun, officially opened during the spring of 1975. One of the earliest performers in the new center was rock 'n' roll king Elvis Presley.

The opening weekend for the Von Braun Center featured the Arts Council's Beaux Arts Ball, performances by locals Ken Turvey, Albert Lane, Lady Shivers Tucker and Mike Sheehy.

Before the VBC opened, productions were presented in auditoriums of West Clinton School or Huntsville High School, the Madison County Coliseum or the Russell Erskine Hotel.
