HAZEL GREEN, Ala. (WHNT) – The Madison County Sheriff’s Office has released a preliminary autopsy result from the murder of  63-year-old Susan Elaine Adkins.

Authorities determined that the cause of Adkins’ death was suffocation.  Sgt. Brian Chaffin with the Madison County Sheriff’s Department said that this was consistent with their ongoing investigation.

Adkins’ body was discovered after concerned family members asked police to do a welfare check at her residence on Tuesday.  When deputies arrived at 100 Laster Lane, Adkins’ common-law husband, Jeffrey Prince Elmore, was at the home.

Investigators discovered Adkins’ body after a search of the residence.

Sheriff’s deputies said Elmore gave a full confession to killing Adkins at the Madison County Sheriff’s office on Tuesday afternoon, just hours after her body had been discovered.  Deputies tell us Elmore was remorseful, and that alcohol may have played a role in the crime.
