FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) - This week we are Paying It Forward to Kitty Lawson. She owns The Coffee Tree Books & Brew and uses her store to help people in the community.

Carolyn Moses says this about Kitty: "If she hears of anyone in the community in need, she is the first one to lend a helping hand. She has opened her doors for numerous concerts and held collections for those that have been hit with hard times (such as medical needs, homes burning, food needs, Christmas collections for kids that would otherwise not have anything. She is amazing."

Kim Martins adds this: "She's raised money to bury people, she's raised money for Eric Freeman's family, she raised money for children over in Florence who's father passed away from leukemia.  I have MS and she has raised money for years for me and my daughter to do the MS Walk and Stand Against MS, thousands of dollars that she's raised and given to us."

When Carolyn presented the $319 Pay It Forward check to Kitty, she really took her by surprise.

"It means so much to me to know that you're here for me when I need you, you're more like a mom than you'd ever believe and I thought it was time that someone told you that so I contacted WHNT and thought we should Pay It Forward to you," said Carolyn.

Kitty says her desire to help people is deep-rooted.

"You know you just love people, I, I'm not 18 anymore and when you've lived a while and you've seen people suffer and you've suffered yourself, you know you just want to give back, just want to be part of making it better," Kitty said.

Kitty adds the money couldn't have come at a better time.

"It's just a blessing, it's a very big blessing and I thank you all," she said.
