ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) — Two people died Friday morning when the pickup they were riding in crashed and burst into flames.

All lanes of Highway 72 are open again.  Westbound traffic had been shut down earlier due to the wreck and cleanup.

The crash happened after 4:00 a.m. on U.S. Highway 72, west of downtown Athens at the Glaze Road intersection.  The driver of the pickup was pulling a utility trailer, headed east.

We understand the truck crossed over both westbound lanes and went down a ravine.  The truck hit the tree and caught on fire.  Two people inside the truck died.  They were both taken to the Alabama Department of Forensics in Huntsville for identification.

Troopers are investigating further.
