SCOTTSBORO, Ala. (WHNT) - A man is in critical condition after a single-vehicle wreck in Scottsboro.

It happened at about 10:30 Thursday night on Highway 79, just south of Goosepond Colony. Police say they believe the driver of an 18-wheeler fell asleep at the wheel. The vehicle ran off the road, went into a ditch and 75 yards into the tree line.

The driver says he was thrown from the truck during the crash.

The cab of the truck burst into flames. The driver was close enough to the truck that the clothes on his body caught fire as well.  The driver has severe burns. He was flown to UAB's Burn Center.

Highway 79 had to be closed down to one lane each direction the entire night.
