St. Luke’s Wins Game One 6-0 Over Shoals Christian In Class 1A Baseball Finals

Montgomery, Ala. – St. Luke’s Episcopal junior left-hander Brandon Cook shut out defending state champion Shoals Christian as the Wildcats posted a 6-0 win over the Flame to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three AHSAA Class 1A Baseball Championship Series Wednesday.

Cook (8-3) scattered eight hits and walked one but didn’t record a strikeout in the win at Paterson Field. However, he kept the Shoals Christian hitters off stride and the St. Luke’s defense turned two double plays to help seal the victory.

First baseman Murphy Mostellar, a senior, was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs to pace St. Luke’s (31-8). Coach Tim Becker’s Wildcats also got two hits from center fielder Justin Ware  and third baseman Danny Haskell. The win was the ninth in a row in t he playoffs for Becker’s team.

Christian Shipe (7-5) allowed 10 hits but just two earn runs to get the loss. He struck out five and also walked just one  for the Flame (27-14). Shipe and shortstop Tanner Traglia had two hits each for Shoals Christian.

The two teams will play game two of the series which moves to Riverwalk Stadium Thursday morning at 10 a.m. The third game, if needed, will be at approximately 1 p.m.
