Several Golf Teams In Contention For State Titles

Muscle Shoals – Ala. – St. Paul’s senior Robby Shelton fired a six-under 66 Monday for the top round of the first day’s competition as the 64th annual AHSAA State Golf Championships got underway at The Shoals Golf Course of the  Robert Trent Jones Trail.

Shelton built a five-stroke lead in the Class 5A individual competition over John Hayden of Briarwood, who had a 71. Russellville led after day one with a team 308. St. Paul’s was second at 312.

In Class 6A, defending state champion Spain Park held a slim two-stroke lead over Northridge, 299-301, with Auburn just three strokes back at 302. The Jaguars’ Connor Smith had the best round at two-under 70 with Alex Green of Fairhope, William Wallace of Northridge and Blake Messer of  Huntsville one shot back at 71.

Guntersville built a two-shot lead over St. James with a first-day 318 total in Class 4A as Wildcats leader Reagan Harrell recorded a two-under 70. He was one shot behind Oneonta’s Cody O’Toole, who carded a three-under  69.

In Class 3A, Bayside Academy holds an eight-stroke lead over White Plains, 304-318. Noticeably absent from the competition is Montgomery Academy, which dropped to 2A this season after winning nine of the last 10 3A crowns. The Eagles did not make the cut in the 1A-2A division, however.

Individual leader in 3A is Good Hope’s Eli Marty, who had a 69. Wagner Ashmore of Trinity was two back at 71.

St. Luke’s shot the best team round of the day (298) to take a 12-shot lead into day two of the 1A-2A division. Hunter Wesley’s 71 was the low score for St. Luke’s and the 1A-2A field.

Muscle Shoals shot a first-day 248 in the 1A-5A competition to hold a 13-stroke lead over Alexandria after the first day’s round. Hartselle, which came into the 40th annual AHSAA Girls State Golf Championships with a four-year hold on the state crown, was 14 shots back at 262.

Defending individual medalist Arin Eddy of Hartselle shot a 72 to take the first-day lead individually. Two shots behind at 74 is Northside’s  Rebecca Chandler.

In Class 6A, two-time defending state champion Mountain Brook shot a 224 to take an eight-shot lead over Auburn (232). Virginia Green of Fairhope had the low round of 72, one shot ahead of Mountain Brook’s Tatum Jackson, who had a 73. The Pirates are third overall at 236.

Play resumes this morning as the 36-hole tournament concludes at The Shoals.
