Decatur, Ala. (WHNT) - By some accounts, Auburn may be inching closer to Alabama in the recruiting battle.  The Tigers have more verbal commitments for the 2014 class, they have almost the same number of four-star recruits and the coaching staff is staying busy during the Spring recruiting period.

Defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson came to Decatur not just to speak to the Auburn contingent in the River City, but also to recruit.  Winning North Alabama is important, he says, but there are other battles all across the country.

"Recruiting has become national," said Ellis Johnson, Auburn defensive coordinator.  "We always want to be strong out of state.  You need to be strong in your own state to energize your fan base, but every program at our level recruits nationally, certainly regionally.  The in-state battles are important and crucial and you always like to win those battles but you also have to have strong classes being out of state."
