HUNTSVILLE  Alexis Yohe pitched a two-hit shutout and Barry advanced to the second round of the South Region Tournament with a 2-0 victory over the University of North Alabama softball team Friday afternoon at Charger Park on the UAH campus.

The Buccaneers, who eliminated UNA from the 2006 regional, scored an unearned run in the top of the second inning and added a solo home run in the fifth. The Lions (39-19) will play an elimination game at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday against the loser of the UAH/West Alabama game.

Barry grabbed a 1-0 lead after taking advantage of a UNA error in the second inning. After reaching base on a single to right center, Kelly Martinez advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a throwing error. She scored on a squeeze bunt by Alexis Kent.

The Bucs added an insurance run in the fifth when Ashley Fernandez connected on a two-out solo home run. The blast was only the third and final hit of the game for Barry.

Hits were even harder to come by for the Lions. UNA managed only two hits on the day, but could never get a runner past second base. Dani Colwill led off the second inning with a double, but was stranded after Yohe (19-7) recovered to retire three straight batters following a walk by Shelby Goodman.

Goodman reached base again in the top of the seventh with a leadoff single. Mallory Patterson then connected on a shot to right field. Kent, however, chased the ball down to record the out and hold the runner at first base.

Goodman advance to second base on a fielder’s choice before Nikki Hodges flied out to right field to end the game.

Breanna Riley (18-9) was stuck with the loss after surrendering the two runs off three hits. She recorded 10 strikeouts to reach double digits in the category for the fourth time this season.
