LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – Investigators say a gun found at Underwood Elementary on Thursday had been previously used in a crime.

Investigators say the unloaded .22 caliber pistol had been used in a bank robbery in 2011.  It was found near the school’s playground on Thursday morning.

The rusty gun was in a bag, and kids had used the bag as a ‘home plate’ while playing ball during recess.

Investigators say they don’t know how the gun turned up at the school and they’re not sure how long the bag had been there.

Police continue their investigation.
