LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – 4th grade students at Underwood Elementary School found a gun near the playground of the school on Thursday.

A viewer alerted WHNT News 19 about this after her grandson came home from school with a note about it in his backpack.

Investigators tell WHNT that the gun, an unloaded .22 caliber pistol, was found in a bag near the playground.  They believe the gun had been there for some time, as it was very rusty.

Chief Investigator Travis Clemmons confirmed that students were in no danger today. Investigators do not believe that a student brought the gun to school.

There has been no word on how the gun came to be near the playground.  Police are investigating.
