OAK GROVE, Ala. (WHNT) – A home on Mooresville Road at Putnam Circle exploded and burst into flames late Wednesday afternoon. Two women inside the house escaped with what were described as minor injuries.

The first firefighters on the scene tell WHNT News 19 the home was completely engulfed in flames when they arrived. Charles Claunch, of the Oak Grove-Thatch Volunteer Fire Department, says his initial efforts were to put water on an LP gas tank at the rear of the home in an effort to prevent yet another explosion.

Firefighters from several area volunteer departments responded to the call, but despite the abundance of manpower and equipment, little could be done to save the home.

Claunch says one of the residents used bottled oxygen and several of the tanks were heard to explode while firefighters were fighting the blaze. He did not know if one of the oxygen bottled was responsible for the initial explosion and fire.
