DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) - An economic bright spot out of the River City. Walmart is poised to open North Alabama's first Neighborhood Market next month. A number of employees are already on the job, but the Help Wanted sign is still in the window.

"I just wanted to get out and get busy," says Brenda Singletary. She retired last year after 41 years with the Salvation Army but says she wasn't ready to be put out to pasture.

"There were some other jobs, there were a couple of jobs that I turned down because in my heart I just didn't feel like that was the place and when Walmart offered me a job, I thought this is it. I go with my gut feeling," Singletary tells WHNT News 19.

Mrs. Singletary is one of roughly a hundred people that will staff the new Walmart Neighborhood Market on Sixth Avenue in Decatur. It opens April 19th.

"We're still in the process of doing some hiring right now but for the most part its been really easy to find good people here in Decatur," store manager Dwain White says. He didn't have figures readily available on the store's economic impact, but city officials say it will run into the millions of dollars each year in payroll, sales taxes and other local expenses. Plus, the new store will provide shoppers with an additional option.

"Because of the way the format is laid out, we're able to cater more to our community as far as their specific needs," White says. Workers began the task of stocking the shelves this week. and there's still some work to do outside, getting the parking lot ready. But White says they'll be ready for shoppers and will open on time next month.

Walmart plans to open yet another Neighborhood Market in Florence this summer.
