HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - Confusion and frustration. Those two words likely sum up the feelings of former patients of a Huntsville doctor under investigation.
State officials say they have probable cause to believe Dr. Shelinder "Shaun" Aggarwal excessively dispensed controlled substances to many of his patients. His abiltity to prescribe those medications has been suspended. The doctor's patients are searching for answers on what steps they need to take to get medication they say they need.
Sandra Cortes is still learning details of the accusations against Dr. Aggarwal.
"I was shocked because I know what I have to go through as a patient," said Cortes.
Cortes is on five pain medications. Dr. Aggarwal prescribed the medications to treat a genetic condition and when a drunk driver crashed into Cortes' car years ago.
Cortes has two days worth of medicine left.
"'I won't be able to work. I will go through severe withdrawals I know because I've been on these things for quite some time," added Cortes.
Dr. Aggarwal wrote Cortes a prescription before the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners suspended his authority to prescribe controlled substances.
"I went to get them filled and the pharmacy would not fill them. So, now I don't know what to do. I came back today to see how I can get these prescriptions," added Cortes.
Cortes tried visiting the doctor's office to figure things out.
"It was crowded. I had other things I had to get done yesterday, so I said well let me wait until today," added Cortes.
Cortes returned to the doctor's office. She came out six minutes later with her medical paperwork including names of other doctors.
"It still leads me trying to hunt a doctor to get these prescriptions filled right away,' added Cortes.
Cortes says she was told when she picks a new doctor, her medical records will be transferred.
People concerned about the process should contact the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners. The number is (334) 242-4116.
