Chargers Move Up In Three Major College Baseball Polls
Huntsville, Ala. – After winning three more games at home this past week, the University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball teams climbed in three of the major Division II college baseball polls that were released Monday afternoon and Sunday night.
The Chargers (16-3) moved up three spots, from No. 19 to No. 16, in both the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and d2baseballnews.com and eight spots, from No. 20 to No. 12, in the collegebaseballlineup.com poll.
The NCBWA poll will be released Tuesday afternoon.
UAH added three wins to their season total this past week as they beat Stillman and swept a doubleheader with conference-rival Valdosta State.
The Chargers notched a 12-8 victory over Stillman on Wednesday behind an impressive five innings of relief from Willard Bacon who struck out 11 batters.
After the first game was postponed due to inclement weather on Saturday, UAH won both games of a doubleheader against Valdosta State to begin conference play. Reigning NCBWA National Player of the Week Conner McCain and the strong arm of Andrew Busby led the team in their first victory as the Chargers won 6-2. A walk-off infield hit by Tyrone Smith swept the doubleheader as Valdosta fell to UAH 5-4 in game two.
Vincent Kortbawi continued his historic hitting streak as he tied the Gulf South Conference record of 37 consecutive games. He batted .308 on the week with three runs scored, a pair of RBIs and a double.
The Chargers lead the Gulf South Conference in all of the major offensive statistics, including batting average, slugging percentage, runs, hits, RBIs, doubles, triples and even home runs.
UAH will be on the road this week as they travel to Carson Newman for a doubleheader on Wednesday and a three- game conference series against Christian Brothers March 9th and 10th.
