MADISON, Ala. (WHNT) - As most of North Alabama may be trying to stay inside and warm during the cold weekend, there's a team of runners who will hit the pavement in Madison, training for a marathon.

One of the runners is a living example of what motivates the Team in Training: a fight for life.

One stride at a time, one event at a time, members of North Alabama's Team in Training run for the future.  It's their job, they say, to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

"Our job out here is to run," said Tim Talbot, one of the runners.  "We run, we raise money and we help those who have blood cancers."

Talbot is a team member who's trains by day and battles leukemia by night.  He was diagnosed with it in March last year.

"I'm one of the fortunate ones," he said. "Someone came before me.  Ten, fifteen years ago who ran with Team in Training to raise money. The money went into research and developed the drugs that I'm on today.  They keep me active with a full healthy life.  Without them, without the folks that came before me, my survival was probably measured in two years.  Now it's about a 95 percent five years of health."

Research, he says, is only one thing the Society funds.  They also help people cope with the diagnosis of a blood cancer and support them financially if they need it.

On this day, Talbot's coach, Dana Hampson, runs with him.  She's motivated by the pain of losing a close friend to leukemia and the happiness of those who survive.

"Being a part of this with Tim and seeing him battle through this and he's got leukemia and he's running a marathon, which is just amazing," Hampson said.  "Just makes all of this worthwhile."

They emphasize anyone can join them -- in any athletic condition -- all a person has to have is a desire to make a difference.

They're training for the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati on May 5th.  The next fundraising opportunity for someone to make a donation for their cause is Monday, March 4th, at Casa Blanca on Highway 72 in Huntsville.   From 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm, if you tell your waiter that you're with TNT or show a flyer, the team will get a donation.
