CHELSEA, Ala. (WHNT) – A man accused of taking a gun to Chealsea Middle School and holding five students hostage has been identified as Ryan Matthey Sims, 21.

The sheriff’s office was able to obtain several warrants for Sims, and he is now being held in the Shelby County Jail. His bonds total $5,015,000 for five charges of kidnapping and one charge of making a terrorist threat.

Investigators say the school was put in lock-down around 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday after a report of a man armed with a gun in the school.  The Deputy assigned to the school moved from the front entrance to where the gunman was seen. The report says the deputy and the school’s principal confronted Sims, and that’s when they say they learned he was holding five female students in the girls locker room against their will.

The principal and deputy were able to talk the man into releasing the students and surrendering himself.

No one was hurt in the incident.
