HAZEL GREEN, Ala. (WHNT) — Highway 231/431 had to be shut down for part of the night because of a wreck.

The wreck happened around 11:30 Monday night in Hazel Green, just north of Joe Quick Road.

Hazel Green volunteer firefighters, along with HEMSI paramedics and the Madison County Rescue Squad, all responded to the accident. According to the Alabama State Troopers, a SUV was exiting McDonald’s when the driver was hit by a vehicle traveling south on Highway 231.

The driver of the SUV was entrapped for about 15 minutes. Medics took both drivers to Huntsville Hospital in serious condition.

What surprised crews working the accident was there were four dogs in cages in the back of the SUV. It took about 30 minutes to get all the dogs out. They appeared to be ok; just scared after the ordeal. They were taken to the Madison County Animal Control Unit until the owner can claim them.

The highway re-opened after about an hour.
