LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) - A man known for his decades of service to the Florence Police Department now wants to lead the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office.

Rick Singleton ran for mayor during the past election but lost by just 400 votes.

However, Singleton isn't giving up on his desire to lead the community.

Singleton’s career started out at the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department nearly four decades ago.  If Singleton gets his way, it will end at the sheriff’s department too.

“I`ve always had a place in my heart for the sheriff’s department and I`ve decided after all the encouragement I`ve gotten, to go ahead and pursue that," said Singleton.

The former Florence Police Chief announced his plan to run for Lauderdale County Sheriff on Facebook.  “I said I`m not ready to quit, I`m ready for a new challenge.”

Since Singleton’s announcement, more than 200 people have showed their support and dozens more left comments and well wishes, even though the race is nearly two years away.

Singleton says he already has goals for the department if he gets elected to take over the job.  “Implementing some of the community policing concepts to the department, and bringing it up to date as far as technology.”

Current Lauderdale County Sheriff, Ronnie Willis, will not say at this time whether he plans to seek re-election.
