HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) -- It's almost time to get rid of the live Christmas trees, but instead of tossing them in the trash, you may want to consider recycling your tree this year.

"It's an excellent way to give back to the environment and recycle," said Carol Casey with the Huntsville Botanical Garden. "We can give these gorgeous trees that have given us so much joy during the holiday season back to the environment."

The Huntsville Botanical Garden makes it easy for residents to recycle their trees. The Christmas tree recycling location is behind the CASA Garden next to Botanical Garden. All you have to do is bring your tree and drop it in the pile of trees.

Casey says you want to make sure all of your ornaments, tinsel, and tree stand are off the tree before your donate it in the garden. As for what happens to the trees, Huntsville Utilities crews come by and help turn them into mulch.

"We actually put them in wood chippers and turn it into mulch so people can come and get the mulch for their gardens year-round," said Casey.

The Garden will accept Christmas trees until January 15th.
