ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) – An early morning traffic accident in downtown Athens sent one person to Huntsville Hospital by MedFlight helicopter. It happened around 5:30 A.M. on South Jefferson Street. The blue Toyota apparently ran off the road and careened through the Hometown Grocery Store parking lot before flipping over in front of another business.

Athens Fire Department responded to the scene and worked for approximately 20 minutes to free the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle. She was moved to an ambulance, and taken across the street where MedFlight had landed in the parking lot of the Athens Public Library. The driver was flown to Huntsville Hospital with what were believed to be serious injuries.

Athens Police were investigating, attempting to determine what caused the wreck.
