Birmingham, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville women’s basketball team concluded its preseason slate on Monday night, falling 74-35 at Division I member UAB. The Lady Chargers – ranked No. 21 nationally in the preseason Division II Bulletin publication – will now turn their sights to the regular season campaign.
Jasmine Hammon – selected as a preseason All-American by the D-II Bulletin – led the Blue and White on the evening with 12 points, while Jordan Smith scored in double figures for the third consecutive game as she chipped in with 11 on the night. Playing in her hometown, Smith also added eight rebounds and four assists.

Juanice Newton was also strong on the glass as she pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds in the contest.

The hosts were strong defensively in the game, limiting UAH to a field goal percentage of just 22.2 percent as the Lady Chargers connected on 10 of their 45 attempts from the field. UAB also forced 25 turnovers, while the visitors created 21 giveaways of their own.
UAH registered 13 steals on the night, and Shannon Steinert led the way with four.
The Blazers featured four players in double figures led by Karisma Chapman’s 17-point, eight-rebound performance.
With expectations high, the Lady Chargers will start the regular season this weekend as they host the Comfort Inn GSC/SIAC Challenge. The favorites to win the Gulf South Conference will tip off Saturday, Nov. 10, against Benedict at 7 p.m. at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall.
