Microsoft is launching the newest version of its Windows operating system, and the new software is designed with a social, more mobile emphasis. The update is designed to make desktop and laptop computers work more like tablets and the company is hoping the new offering will help it regain ground against rivals Apple and Google – which are advancing mobile technology.

You can click here to watch CNET’s Windows 8 launch live blog coverage Thursday. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will formally launch the OS and maybe talk a little about the company’s Surface tablet.
