HARVEST, Ala. (WHNT) Hundreds of vehicles travel back and forth on highway 53 between Douglas and Jeff Roads daily. Those drivers face lane shifts, moving signs and now a warning from highway officials.

The 18 month, 4 million dollar road widening project is nearly two-thirds complete according to officials with the Alabama Department of Transportation, but drivers are complaining about confusing lane changes and signs in the area.

ALDOT officials say they are doing everything by the book on the project and it is a dangerous area due to the amount of traffic. Drivers WHNT News 19 spoke with Tuesday say the signs and cones are confusing.

A fatal crash that occurred inside the construction area last weekend is still under investigation and there have been several other crashes in the area.

This is not the first time drivers have reached out to WHNT News 19 with concerns about the project.

Officials say drivers need to obey the reduced speed limits and no passing zones. They also urge drivers to use extreme caution and pay attention while driving through the area because as the project continues the signs and cone zone will continue to change.
