HAZEL GREEN, Ala. (WHNT) - A serious car wreck in Hazel Green sent two people to the hospital on Sunday, while also tying up traffic on a busy thoroughfare for almost an hour.

The accident happened shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday on Highway 231/431 by the Wavaho gas station.

State troopers on scene told WHNT News 19 that a green Pontiac Grand Am was attempting to turn left out of the Wavaho when it was t-boned by a silver Buick heading south on the highway. Eyewitnesses said the collision was so violent that it sent the Buick bouncing to the other side of the road and directly into a telephone pole that nearly gave way.

The drivers of both vehicles were rushed to the hospital, with the jaws of life having to be used to free the driver of the Buick. One man who saw the accident said he was amazed no one was killed.

"I was hoping no one was hurt," said Wavaho counter clerk Mike Harbin, who had a front-seat view of the wreck. "I heard a big boom, and I kind of turned around and looked, and I saw the Buick kind of bounce and hit the telephone pole."

Troopers said the injuries for both victims were serious, but not life-threatening. No names have been released yet, and the accident remains under investigation.
