Thursday is Flag Day, the day the U.S. Army celebrates its anniversary and the nation honors the Stars and Stripes.

Several events were held around the Tennessee Valley to celebrate Old Glory.

Athens State University held its annual Flag Day ceremony, sponsored by the school’s alumni association.  Several older flags were on display, and Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks spoke about the importance of the flag and remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Marks is a veteran of the war in Vietnam.  A veteran of World War II was also in attendance.

The Athens State University Community Band also played patriotic music.  The event was held in the Sandridge Student Center Ballroom.
